Nestled in the middle of two Appalachian mountain ranges, Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is the kind of place where brewers, builders, artists, designers and farmers with welcoming smiles and soft mountain accents blend hard-working practicality with boundary-pushing creative expression. And 9 & 19’s Daniel Lefkowitz is no exception. Always a designer at heart, Lefkowitz was trained over time in traditional wood and metalworking techniques when work demanded it. He soon realized he could leverage the craft skills he had built over a career of hard work to bring his playfully elegant design vision to life, and 9 & 19 was born. Since then, Lefkowitz has designed and built a collection of imaginative modern furniture that draws inspiration from Shaker, Japanese, mid-century modern and traditional Appalachian influences. Each piece celebrates the natural detail of the material, and because of that each piece is just a little bit different. As Lefkowitz likes to say, every piece of 9 & 19 furniture is handmade and perfectly imperfect. We couldn't agree more.
